Kürzdorfer Bockbier Dunkel had a gorgeous pour with a chestnut hue and ample rocky off-white head. It took forever. A mix of roast, dark chocolate malt and hops in the nose carry over into the richly malty palate.

Held-Bräu Weizenbock bottle
Held-Bräu Weizenbock is one gorgeous beer and possibly the best dark Weizenbock I’ve ever had in Franconia. It’s roasty for the style and I’d generally not like that but in this one it really works as it interplays with the hops in a subdued way. The lingering finish is sublimely dry for the style and shows a little less alcohol in this style can be a good thing at 6.9%.
I see a Maibock and I want to paint it black
What color is a Maibock? Any color. When does it come out? Usually late April into early May. How long does it last? Not long. Head to the Bierquellenwanderweg to hike an amazing beer hiking trail and taste some of the finest dark lagers on the planet. Go very early in May and you'll find two lovely Maibocks too.
Veldensteiner Frühlings Märzen
Veldensteiner Frühlings is a rich malty typical of the style with a signature spicy element and a hint of roast before the lingering, semi-dry, semi-bitter finish.
Veldensteiner Rotbier
Veldensteiner Rotbier is a nice mix of malt and hops with a clean, dry finish that's perfectly bitter.
Benaburger/Brunnhuber Bier/Zoigl on tap
Benaburger/Brunnhuber Zoigl/Bier is a balanced richly malty unfiltered beer with some caramel in the nose and a hint of roast in palate. The finish is lingering, semi-dry and semi-bitter.
What makes the Walberfest so special? Sometimes, it’s not about the beer.
The Walberlafest is perhaps Germany's oldest spring festival. Set high on a hill called the Walberla, it is certainly the most atmospheric. Hike around it before ascending for the most dramatic entrance.
Böheim Helles on tap
Böheim Helles is a balanced unfiltered light beer with a lingering semi-dry, semi-bitter finish.
A Prime Passage to Prösslbräu
The Naabtal is a gorgeous lush valley with tons of hiking and biking opportunities. It is also dotted with quite a few great breweries so it's a prime beer hiking region. I met up with Prime Passages founder Kevin Holsapple for a hike from Pielenhofen to Adlersberg. Of course, Prösslbräu was our beery destination. Their Palmator was a just reward.
Nürnberg Rotbier Roundup: What is the best Rotbier in Nuremberg?
Nuremberg was a noted beer town in the middle ages and Rotbier was king. It fell into disfavor when modern lagers took over but were revived in 1984 by the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. Currently, there are five regularly brewed Rotbiers in town but which one is the best? Find out here.
