Veldensteiner Rotbier
Brewery: Kaiser-Bräu
Town: Neuhaus an der Pegnitz
Style: Rotbier 5.4%
Color: red, deep amber
Head: off-white, rocky
Nose: malty, spicy
Body: medium
Palate: malty, hint of spice, semi-dry, underlying hops
Finish: clean, dry, semi-bitter
Served: from a bottle bought in Neuhaus an der Pegnitz
Impression: I shied away from this beer and perhaps brewery for years but have to say, this Rotbier is better than the competition in Nürnberg. Only Schanzenbräu holds up at all. It’s unusually dry for the style in the mold of Geyer’s, still my favorite. There’s both malt and underlying hops along with a hint of spice. It’s a deceptive 5.4% with a clean, dry finish that’s perfectly bitter. Glad I got it.
