Knoblach Ungespundet Lager is a hop forward but balanced low carbonation session beer. There’s noble hops in the nose and palate. It’s a great example of a hoppy beer having plenty of malt backbone. The lingering finish is quite dry and bitter but not overly so.
Hönig Maibock is an unfiltered amber example of the style. With noble hops, grain and a hint of caramel in the nose, it's an enticing beer. The richly malty palate is fruity and quite dry for the style. The lingering finish is dry and semi-bitter. A wonderful experience to drink it in their lovely Biergarten on a spring day.
Drei Kronen Böckla is a malt forward example of the style with some dried fruit in both the nose and palate before a lingering, semi-dry finish.
Griess Keller Bock is a hop forward richly malty brew more suited to sipping than a raucous Bockbieranstich. While not a traditional Franconian Bock, it outshines many that safely hide in the confines of the bland Hallerbock one often finds.
The 2024 edition of the Kreisla 36 is an unfiltered Export by four of the five breweries in the Memmelsdorf postal code (Humme, Göller, Höhn and Drei Kronen). I was lucky to be doing a tour out in the area recently and found it on tap at Brauerei Hummel. It had a golden hue and dense creamy head and was quite lively so it took them a fair amount of time to pour. The light grain in the nose foretold a similar balanced palate which was quite dry for the style without a lot of bitterness. The lingering finish was also moreishly dry.
Hölzlein Rauch from gravity dispense is a very lightly smoky session beer with a faint grainy quality and semi-dry, clean finish. Excellent and a beer for those who say they don't like Rauchbier.
Griess St. Petrus Festbier is one of Franconia's best with a balanced palate featuring spicy hops and fruity malt. The lingering semi-dry, semi-bitter finish is moreish.
Hummel Festbier Hell is a richly malty brew tinged with both honey and grassy hops. The lingering finish is semi-dry and bittersweet.
Brandholz Brauhaus has reopened in the old Brauerei Winkler building. The new Keller Pils was a bit buttery on this occasion but I'm sure they'll sort it out and it will be a great example when they do.
