Hölzlein Rauch from gravity
Brewery: Hölzlein
Town: Lohndorf
Style: Rauchbier 5%
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, creamy
Nose: light grain, faint smoke
Body: medium, soft
Palate: balanced, light smoke, underlying hops
Finish: clean, semi-dry, semi-bitter
Served: from gravity dispense at the brewery
Impression: After sampling this from a bottle in 2023, it became one of the beers I sought most on tap in 2024 and got lucky when in its first week of release, it was from gravity dispense. It’s obviously much softer but is also quite a few notches less hoppy. The malt is much more forward and smoke perhaps more restrained. The finish isn’t quite as dry but certainly quaffable.
Next beer or back to the beer list.

I'm an American living in Munich and Bamberg. Why? Well, I came for the beer but stayed for the girl. I'm very happily married to a German woman. Of course, the bonus of great beer certainly doesn't hurt. An avid love of hiking and finding new beers has led me to found Beerwanderers, an information resource on beer hiking trails in Franconia with an emphasis on Franconian food specialties and the endless variety of amazing beer the region is renowned for. I also published my first book Beer Hiking Bavaria which features 50 beer hikes in Bavaria and lead beer hiking experiences for those who love beer & nature. View all posts by beerwanderers
