Festbier. This is a large and quite general category. It’s basically a special beer for occasions (Fests) or times of year. You see a lot of them close to Christmas and the more commercial ones can be on the bland side but some in Franconia are fantastic. While commercial ones tend to be golden, they can be any color and hover around 5.5%.

five very different Franconian Festbiers
One of my favorites is the very dark Maifest from Hofmann in Höhenschwarz. If you’re looking for a more traditional one, try Huppendorfer’s Weihnachtsfestbier or a hoppier one like Kaiser Festbier. The unfiltered Roppelt Festbier is worth seeking out. The very interesting Stern-Bräu Festbier has a unique smoky quality.

I'm an American living in Munich and Bamberg. Why? Well, I came for the beer but stayed for the girl. I'm very happily married to a German woman. Of course, the bonus of great beer certainly doesn't hurt. An avid love of hiking and finding new beers has led me to found Beerwanderers, an information resource on beer hiking trails in Franconia with an emphasis on Franconian food specialties and the endless variety of amazing beer the region is renowned for. I also published my first book Beer Hiking Bavaria which features 50 beer hikes in Bavaria and lead beer hiking experiences for those who love beer & nature. View all posts by beerwanderers
