When Beerwanderers first started bringing out newbies into the Franconian countryside, I received an email from a mother asking if she could bring her twelve year old twins on the tour since I had sixteen listed as the minimum age. I explained that it was a beer hike with multiple stops at breweries and she still thought it sounded like something they would like. Despite an initial and perhaps understandable apprehension on my part, it went incredibly well and the woman wrote such a touching review I’ve never forgotten it. She said it was the best day of their European vacation and that I was wonderful with the kids. She even went as far as to say I should market myself to families.

some families beerwandering
Fast forward five years and despite not actively pursuing families, it seems to be catching on with them just the same. Nearly 60% of the tours I’ve done have involved family members from father/son duos to three sisters with their Mom. What drove them to pick this type of experience over countless others? Sure, it sounded like fun but it also sounded like something different, a chance to experience something outside of the typical tourist box. The combination of doing something physical but also of enjoying quintessential Bavarian cuisine is a winning combination.

views & brews
Of course, there have been couples and friends enjoying the experience too. Brews & views, what’s not to like? Learning about local customs, delicacies and beer culture is best done hands-on with someone who’s been exploring the region for over 40 years and has called it home since 2010.

many agree, Andechs really does have the best pretzels
While Andechs has been the most popular choice, exploring the Bamberg Countryside Breweries is a strong second. I’ve been surprised that many hadn’t even heard of the two beery pilgrimage sites but was happy I’ve had the opportunity to expose them to places I know they now hold close to their hearts, as I have for so many years.
