Formerly the Kaiserhof Burgschanke, the reinvented Bastion Marie is a more upscale outlet of the local beers, as befitting its lofty location in the Rosenberg Fortress. With views over the town, it’s a lovely setting. I was there in January so obviously sought refuge in the cozy interior.

cozy interior & Mariechen Naturtrüb

I had planned on having lunch at the Kaiserhof Gaststätte but it was closed lunchtime due to the slow time of year. I was happy to find this lovely location as a substitute. I was also pleasantly surprised that they had a beer brewed just for this facility, aptly named Mariechen. Of course, I got one.

their Schmäußbräu & Leberkäs mit Ei

They had a small but varied menu with some higher end meals but I was more into simple fare and opted for the old standby, Leberkäs mit Ei since it came on Bratkartoffeln. It was a little pricey but the quality was exceptional. One of the tastiest I’ve had, though the potatoes could have used a litte more Brat. My owner had said they had a dark beer on tap and I’d read about their Schwedentrunk and assumed it was that. I got one to go with my meal. I later discovered on the bill that it was in fact their Schmäußbräu, a slightly lighter offering.

the Kaiserhöfer Pils & a gift from Marie

I had been planning on saving the Kaiserhof Pilsner for that evening but it was a dreary day so I decided to have one while there as the light was good and they had small pours. When I paid up, the owner said went to her fridge and brought me out a bottle of the Mariechen. I thanked her but wasn’t sure how I was going to get it home as I’d bought 13 beers at the shop earlier. When I poured it at home, I was glad I hadn’t left it behind as it was a filtered version of their beer, totally different and for me, much better. Thanks, Marie!

I’ll definitely return here in summer so I can enjoy a beer with the view. I just might get the Leberkäs again too.

Beers: Kaiserhof Mariechen, Kaiserhof Pilsner & Kaiserhöfer Schmäußbräu on tap. Bottled Kaiserhof Mariechen Urhell & Weisser Kaiser.
