Kommunbräu Rehau is a communal brewery in the small town of Rehau. First mentioned in 1234, Rehau lies in the Hof country of Upper Franconia. Nestled in the foothills of the Fichtelgebirge, the compact charming old town would make a good base for exploring the area. It’s easily reached via regular trains from nearby Hof.

Kommunbräu Rehau is certainly the main reason for Beerwanderers to make their way to what would likely be an overlooked town.

History & tradition
Kommunbräu Rehau was founded in 2011 and their dedication to reviving traditional customs of communal brewing shows. They currently have over 300 members and seek out new ones regularly. With the construction of a brewing museum and introduction of a hop garden, they are a very active group. They brew once a month and hold quite a few events a year.
Beers: Rehauer Bernstein. Seasonal: Bernsteinfarbener Weihnachtsbock, Heller Doppelbock, Rehauer Hell. Occasional brews: Rehauer Märzen, Pilsener Fliesnschmied.
I was unable to attend the Kellerfest this year due to too many events going on that day but it’s high on my list for 2027. Thankfully, the weekend before was the first (of what is hopefully an annual event) Bayerisch-Tschechisches Bierfestival (website).
Bayerisch-Tschechisches Bierfestival
This lovely festival featured both Bavarian and Czechian beers. The former were largely very small breweries from Upper Franconian, including some of the harder to visit communal breweries. The setting was lovely, right on the Marktplatz with lots of trees providing shade and charming buildings as its backdrop. Seating was Biergarten style benches.

The beer
It was very well-organized. You paid 2€ for a .2l tasting glass. It could be returned when you were done but it was quite nice so I kept it. The pouring line was at .1l, allowing plenty of space for an ample head. This was a blessing with so many breweries on hand. There was also the option for a full .5l pour. This could be in both unbranded and branded mugs. The latter were obviously at a higher deposit. The full list of breweries is on the website and would likely change next year if it returns. With so many choices, I stuck strictly to Franconian breweries. I managed to try 21 beers from 13 breweries. It was a great pleasure to finally sample two excellent beers from Kommunbräu Rehau.
Beers sampled: Kommunbräu Rehauer Bernstien, Kommunbräu Rehau Heller Doppelbock, Budenschuster Maibock, Kommunbräu Sechsämterland Wallenstein 1632, Kommunbräu Sechsämterland Heinrichs Buchenrauchdoppelbock, Kommunbräu Sechsämterland Kirgl Gold-Dad Selber Zoigl, Biermanufaktur 95100 Diamant Pils, Biermanufaktur 95100 Süffisant Kupfer, BePu Heimdeidla, Museumsbrauerei Goldkonach Kellerbier, Museumsbrauerei Goldkonach Böhmische Pils, Neuscherl Bräu Helles, Neuscherl Bräu Böhmische Pils, Hopfen Häusla Bernstein Ale, Kannerschreuther Haisla Dunkel, Gottmansgrüner Pils, Kastanienbräu Helles, Ochsenhopf Bischofsgrün Pils, Ochsenhopf Hazy IPA, Schlossbrauerei Stelzer Kupfer, Schlossbrauerei Stelzer Trunk.

The food
There was a variety of snack-like foods, perfect for the small beers. Metzgerbräu came from about as far away as any of the breweries. Since I get there often enough, I didn’t have their beer but was happy to support them by getting some of their amazing smoky ham.

a great snack & Der Bierschoff
I most enjoyed the Bayerisch Tschechisches Bierfestival and hope it’s an annual event. Across the board, the brewers manning the booths were very friendly and willing to talk about their beers. The setting was super pleasant too. I met up with some friends and even finally ran into Der Bierschoff after quite a few years of corresponding on Instagram.
Kommunbräu Rehau was particularly good and I look forward to returning to Rehau for one of their festivals soon too.
Back to towns or search for brewery by name.
