Altenberger Brauhaus Schwarzbier
Brewery: Altenberger Brauhaus
Town: Altenberg-Oberasbach
Style: Schwarzbier 4.9%
Color: very dark mahogany to black
Head: tan, creamy, chiffon-like
Nose: richly malty, hint of roast
Body: medium to full
Palate: balanced, richly malty, full roast, hint of espresso, underlying hops
Finish: lingering, dry, semi-bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: Served in a logo .3l glass, they took their time for a well-presented pour sans over carbonation. This is one gorgeous Schwarzbier, nearly black with a rocky tan head and roasty nose. It’s both balanced and supremely dry with a light bitter roast that is surprisingly enticing. The lingering finish is again quite dry but not overly bitter. Worth the trip in itself.

Thanks for the tip on this place. In 2014 I stayed in an apartment that is technically close enough to walk here – well, just on the cusp – but didn’t know anything about it (since I am not local and was just a visitor I had no idea it was there). definitely going to check it out when I return some day.
Definitely worth a stop. I’ve known about it for a few years but only open those three nights so not ideal for getting there.
