Held-Bräu Dunkles Braunbier
Brewery: Held-Brau
Town: Oberailsfeld
Style: Dunkles
Color: deep chestnut
Head: dense, tan
Nose: malty, hint of chocolate, licorice
Body: full-bodied, low carbonation
Palate: a big malty flavor, some chocolate and licorice
Finish: long, dry, bittersweet
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: Another case of high expectations not being quite met but that’s more my fault in this case than perhaps the beer’s. Expecting a more typical dry fruity brew, this is more a true Dunkles more common in Munich. In this case, it was a very nice example of the style, with a rich malty flavor nicely mixed with a bit of chocolate. The finish was surprisingly dry and made one want to linger to drink more. I’ve been back a few times and have really enjoyed the beer sans expectations. It goes very well with food and eating at Held-Bräu is always on the agenda when I go.
Next beer or back to the beer list.
Thanks for enjoying, Jade. Hope you make it to Franconia one day to enjoy the many hiking trails and of course the wonderful beer. Prost.
