ECK Saphir Bock
Brewery: Brauerei Gasthof ECK
Town: ECK
Style: Hellerbock
Color: unfiltered deep golden
Head: white, creamy
Nose: citrus hops
Body: medium
Palate: dry, fruity, some apricot
Finish: lingering, dry, bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: This was a pleasant a surprise. According to my quite dated guide, they were noted for a Pilsner back in the day and had a traditional Dopplebock during Lent but there was no mention of either on their menu. There was, however, this Hellerbock with obvious craft beer leanings. Hopped with Saphir hops, it was a dry fruity Bock with a touch of apricot before the dry bitter finish. It was quite dangerous at 6.7% and appeared to be a regular beer on tap.
How about the ECK Wilderer Dunkel or check out the Fronconian beer list.
