Tuk Tuk Brew is the creation of the Leeu Collection, who own and run a collection of wine-oriented businesses the Franschoek Valley. They decided to get into the craft beer business and used the know how of already in the business Cape Brewing Company (CBC) in nearby Paarl. Their head brewer is the former brewer at Woodstock Brewery in Cape Town.
Mushroom & quinoa salad and a fish taco
Obviously, you know a place like this is going to look good and it does. It’s a modern brewpub, all squeaky clean. The food is eclectic but offers some simple fare, nice in Franschoek, more renowned for fine dining. You’d expect a fairly safe beer line-up and that’s what you’ll find. The Tuk Tuk regular beers are no surprise: Lager, Weizen, Dunkel and Pale Ale. They also had their own IPA on tap when I was there. Oddly, the also carry the a selection from the CBC lineup: Amberweisse, IPA and an Imperial IPA. I know the two are linked but still find this a bit odd to compete with each other right in the newer brewpub’s location.
Tuk Tuk Dunkel and IPA
We weren’t overly hungry so just had some nachos, a fish taco and a tasty mushroom & quinoa salad. Nothing was amazing but all certainly good enough for a light meal. Both the Tuk Tuk Dunkel and Tuk Tuk IPA were quite good. I also had the CBC Imperial IPA and found it lacking after the Tuk Tuk offering.
While I wouldn’t go out of my way to go to Tuk Tuk if I’m ever lucky enough to be in Franschoek again, I imagine I’ll seek refuge from the wine here again!
