Founded in 1852, the Glenk Exportbrauerei grew into a relatively large brewery by the late 1800s but had slid a fair amount by the time of its demolition in early 2011. From that time until 2016, it was contract brewed at Stöckel in Hintergereuth. A new brewery was built when it changed ownership in 2015. Brewing resumed the next year, at least on a small scale basis. It is unclear if all beers, especially bottled ones are brewed onsite and the bottling likely occurs at Becher-Bräu across the road. For that reason, it would seem any beers not brewed onsite would be done there as well, rather than the much further Stöckel.

some bottles which piqued my interest

It was a brewery I had little interest in aside from its history until I started seeing some bottles in shops. While the Glenk Pils wasn’t exactly amazing, the Festbier and Bock showed a bit more promise.  So, I was happy to see that the Glenk Garten had reopened albeit as a Greek restaurant. I wanted to make sure I made it there in case it closes once again.

a welcome reopening

I’ll be honest, once I smelled the food, I wished I’d not eaten the Brotzeit at the Herzogkeller just before coming this way. While I am a huge fan of traditional food, it can get tiresome and this is not the first brewery in Franconia to turn into a Greek restaurant. It’s for good reason, Germans love Greek food and I’m a fair fan, as well. The host seemed sad I wasn’t going to eat but was friendly nonetheless and explained that the Glenk Pils was indeed self-brewed but not the Altstädter Dunkel. According to what I’ve read afterwards, both should be brewed by Glenk but this again points to some uncertainty as to whether they in fact brew all of their beers.  I almost didn’t get the dark beer but was again unimpressed with the Pils so got a small one. I’m glad I did and it’s what I would drink if I were to return. Whoever makes it, it’s better.

a couple of quick beers on tap at the Glenk Garten

I’m not sure if I’ll return but it is very close to Becher Bräu and if I’m in the mood for some Greek food, I just might pop back in for a meal and for sure an Altstädter Bier.

Beers on tap: Glenk Bräu Pils, Glenk Bräu Original Altstädter Bier.
