Brauerei Friedel history
Brauerei Friedel was founded in 1447 and remains in the Friedel family. This small brewpub isn’t the easiest place to visit as it’s only open on event days. These are listed on the back of their Bierdeckel and may vary from year to year. Approximate dates are above.

Zentbechhofen Kirchweih 2025
I finally made it to one of Brauerei Friedel’s events: the Kirchweih in July of 2024. Since there is no public transportation, I got a bus to Herrnsdorf and did a nice 5 km hike from there. I arrived at their Festzelt to be the first one served at 10:00 am for Frühschoppen. Their special Kirchweih Festbier is brewed only for the event. It was entirely different from the regular Festbier I’d had in a bottle a few years prior. It was indeed a beer worth the walk.

After a couple of Mass, I made my way into pub proper to find it packed. They managed to squeeze us onto a table with some locals outside. I finally got to try what was listed as their Vollbier on tap. This filtered version was quite different from the bottled unfiltered one I had a few years ago.

Brauerei Friedel food
We ordered our food right away but it took well over 90 minutes before I got my admittedly tasty Roulade. I moved onto their lovely Kellerbier. My friend unfortunately had to leave and never got his Käseschnitzel and as you might imagine, he wasn’t very happy. It was admittedly very crowded. Still, with only five dishes, most roasts with dumplings and sauce, it was an unacceptably long wait. Even the locals at our table said it was nuts. If it weren’t for them prodding the server, I’m not sure I would have eaten that day either. Needless to say, it was a less than ideal visit but I was beyond happy to finally get inside the pub, drink their beers on tap and eat.

Friedel Bockbieranstich 2025
I made it back with my wife for the Brauerei Friedel Bockbieranstich in October 2024. With a reservation and an early arrival, getting food was much easier. Both my wife’s Schäuferla and my smoked pork belly with beans and dumplings were excellent. Their rich Bock, Friedelsator on tap, was top notch. I’d be happy to return but it’s not an easy one due to the late start and lack of public transportation.

Brauerei Friedel has excellent beer and food, it but isn’t the easiest place to visit due to it’s opening hours. Be sure to consult their schedule before setting out. Thankfully, Der Zentbechhöfner Bierkeller recently reopened up the road. They serve an exclusive Friedel Hausbier on tap but they are only open in summer.
