Located only 20k/30 minutes from downtown Cape Town, Hout Bay is a convenient lunch stop if driving over to do Chapman’s Peak Drive. The town of Hout Bay itself isn’t particularly scenic but its setting in a deep protected bay very much is.  Out on its very outermost point, there is a cluster of restaurants specializing in, as you might imagine, seafood. Urban Brewing is conveniently located amongst these small businesses, which makes for easy parking as well as a fair choice in things to eat.

Urban Brewing Co. is a funky little brewery with a modern interior quirky enough to make it very appealing. It’s an open space perfect for music, which they feature regularly. You can see the brewing equipment and the staff are more than happy to show you around if you show any interest.

Urban Brewing features a modern but quirky interior & nice outside seating, too

Along with their line-up of four regular beers, the brewery also makes its own cider, though unfortunately they were out due to a shortage of apples as a result of the extreme low water levels.  Though the brewery does not have any food aside from bagged snacks like chips, they do allow you to bring food in from neighboring restaurants like local legend Snoekies just across the road. This is one hell of a Fish & Chips shop and can greatly recommend it.

Snoekies is reason enough to go to Hout Bay

I tried three of the four beers on tap and found them all good, especially the Stout and Pilsner. I bought some beer to go and got one of the Weiss Beers to try and thought it was the weakest offering. Admittedly, I live in Munich so am pretty picky when it comes to that style. I wouldn’t say it was bad, just not a really good Weissbier nor up to their other offerings.  That said, if it’s your favorite style, I don’t think you’d be disappointed by it. More detailed reviews of their other beers are on the links below.

On Tap: Judas Peak Blonde Ale, Monkey’s Paws Pilsner, Dungeons Stout, Talisman Weiss Beer.
