Saphir Sri Lankan Kitchen

Saphir  Sri Lankan Kitchen is a lush oasis on the western edge of Bamberg. The life long dream of Sri Lankan owner Sydney Swaris began in his home country, where he learned his culinary skills. He started small with the Saphir Imbiss, but made the leap to his current location in 2024. The green setting only adds to its Sri Lankan feel, and the owner pointed out that the Inselstadt area his place is set on is very similar to the island he’s from.

a lovely space to relax inside & out

Saphir Sri Lankan Kitchen has a stylish interior with warm low lighting, and there’s an umistakable island flair. Everyone was sitting outside on the warm summer evening of my visit. The lush garden area was filling up as I left and it really feels like you’re been transported to another place. Service was very personal, friendly and efficient. You’re no longer in Franconia, Toto.

The food & drinks

Saphir Sri Lankan Kitchen offers an array of traditional Sri Lankan dishes. Conveniently, there is a PFD of their menu with prices on their website.  There are nice sounding large sharing platters, but dining alone I chose a lentil curry with jackfruit and string hoppers. The owner came up to see if I’d been to Sri Lanka and knew about the food. He was happy to hear I’d spend a few weeks there. It was a very tasty meal. I happily washed it down with a Mahrs Helles, but they have an extensive drinks menu, both with and without alcohol.

a super curry at Saphir Sri Lankan Kitchen

My first visit to Saphir Sri Lankan Kitchen was a resounding success. I’d seen the restaurant on Google Maps, so I had in in my sights for some time. I’m glad I finally made the effort to check it out. The garden setting was a super pleasant surprise. The owner was warmly welcoming. As for the food, it was beyond expectations. This is one place I won’t have to try hard to get my wife to try. I’m sure we’ll be visiting it together soon.

Beers: Huppendorfer Vollbier, Mahrs U & Mahrs Helles on tap. Bottled Fäßla Pils, Gutmann Weizen.  Alcohol free: Gutman Weizen.
