Founded in 1587, this small village brewery just outside Bamberg is easy to get to and worth a stop for their great food and beer. It was renovated in 2005 but retains a traditional atmosphere with some nice new touches.
Our first visit in December 2010, their Bock (more recent and flattering tasting below!) was on and though not up there with Bamberg’s best, it was a nice easy drinking brew which went well with our two meal choices: pork medallions in a pan with roasted potatoes and pork medallions in a creamy mushroom sauce with Spätzle.
Pork medallions seemed to be the choice
I stopped by all too briefly in May of 2019 before starting my hike to Weiher while researching my book Beer Hiking Bavaria. I only had time for a quick beer and chose the Helles since it looked to be a hot hike. It was most refreshing and I can’t wait to get back for some of their great food next time.

We finally returned for their Bock in December 2021 and it was much better than I’d remembered. We also had another amazing lunch, perhaps eclipsing even our first time here. I’d had their bottled Pils previously but decided to try it on tap and was glad I did. We both started off with a delicious pumpkin soup too.

We both got the Braumeisterpfanne, pork loin with mixed vegetables over fried potatoes. It was really perfectly done. My wife stuck with her Kellerbier Dunkel and I switched over to the same.

Though the meal was ample, it was my birthday and the weather wasn’t enticing us to leave. We’d already had a Bock but once we saw Apfelküchle on the menu, we knew we’d have another. The Bock was much better than either of us remembered it.

It was such a great visit, we’ve decided to go there every December now for the Bock and my birthday!
