Founded in 1857 by a returning Bayreuth native who had studied and brewed in Munich, Hugo Bayerlein’s Bayreuther Bierbrauerei grew quickly to accommodate a relative lack of local beer and a growing population of beer drinkers. It was bought up in 1872 by local bankers who immediately used selling stocks to propel even greater growth. It was the largest brewery in the city by 1934. Most of the stocks were then bought up by its neighboring brewery Maisel in 1965.  They continued to operate independently with Maisel concentrating on top fermenting wheat beers and the Bierbrauerei on bottom fermenting lagers branded as Aktien (stock). It soon became apparent the upkeep on two entirely different facilities so close to each other made little sense so a common one was built on the same grounds. They continue to concentrate on their specialties or at least market them as such. With Maisel & Friends brand featuring Craft Beer introduced in 2012, top-fermented beers were also brought into their fold.

two great old brewery buildings preserved even if now one

As with many breweries of that time, it was built on a series of catacombs. These were initially in place for ore extraction but became popular for beer storage in the 1800s as it was the perfect place to keep the beer cool in summer. Tours are available with prior booking. Bierkellers as storage turned into Bierkellers for the enjoyment of beer and unsurprisingly, the Herzogkeller is the largest of its kind in Bayreuth.

While not ideal, their working together has helped preserve some great old brewery buildings. They produce traditional beers with the Aktien brand, as well as the newer Bayreuther Brauhaus brand, maintaining not only a fair range but also good reach into restaurants and super markets. Some might say too good but that’s business in the 21st century.

Beers: Aktien Zwick’l Kellerbier, Aktien Landbier Dunkel, Bayeuther Brahaus Hell, Bayreuther Brauhaus Bock, Bayreuther Brauhaus Weissbier, Bayreuther Brauhaus Rauch Märzen
