Lohmühl history & atmosphere
Lohmühl was a former tanner’s mill. The name means bark mill and it was quite active from the 16th to the 18th century due to its location close to water channels. It was demolished in 1969. The half-timbered structure currently in use was completely renovated in 2000. The “living room,” as locals call it became immediately popular. When the owner died, locals and a new tenant thankfully stepped in to buy the property.

cozy Lohmühl: the living room
Lohmühl has a lovely interior oozing coziness. The upstairs, in particular, is a place to lose time. It looks like a period piece home of the era and it’s no wonder it’s a popular spot. It was completely empty on my visit as it was a gorgeous autumn evening. The courtyard seating is quite atmospheric with views of the half-timbered building from pretty much every table.
The beer
Lohmühl has a small variety of local bottled beers but their calling card is Huppendorfer Vollbier from gravity dispense. I’ve heard this is only on busy evenings so it’s best perhaps to pay your visit on a weekend. It’s a good idea to reserve, particularly if coming with a group.

The food
Lohmühl has a small, but eclectic menu. Vegetarians are well-catered to. The prices are quite fair for the simple dishes, some more in the snack category. I wasn’t in the mood for any meat so opted for a chick pea dish, which was very tasty and quite filling.

a tasty healthy meal in a lovely setting
Lohmühl is a must stop if in Forchheim for the evening. It took me some time to get here but I hope to return soon. The service was friendly and efficient. The vegetarian options are a plus when you tire of more typical Franconian food. The atmosphere is super and the bonus of a gravity dispense beer shouldn’t be overlooked as it becomes increasingly rare.
Beers: Huppendorfer Vollbier from gravity dispense. Bottled: Greif Hell, Pils, Leicht, Weizen hell, Weizen dunkel, alcohol free, Hebendanz Export, Rittmayer Weizen alcohol free.
