When their Felsenkeller is closed, the restaurant is open according to their own schedule.
This is an atmospheric Bierkeller set in a lush forest on the edge of town. It’s about a 3 km walk from the brewpub but it’s well worth it. It has a more limited menu then the restaurant but the quality of their Brotzeit is excellent and features bread made under their own production. It’s unclear where but it was very fresh and great. We had hoped to eat in the restaurant after a snack here but we were more than full after sharing a couple plates.

a tasty Krug of their Kellerbier & a great mixed meat plate
We started off with their Kellerbier hell and a mixed meat plate with their homemade bread. The bonus was they had Bratkartoffeln (roast potatoes) which were also excellent. The Kellerbier is called Helles on their website but it is very much a Kellerbier and much drier than any Helles you’d ever find. It was previously called Original but on the courtesy bottle kindly left in our room, it was called Helles and though unfiltered, it appeared quite clear. Whatever you call it, it’s a great beer for the Keller and went well with the food.

Bratwurst & their Dunkles
We split a plate of Bratwurst which had the option of horseradish rather than sauerkraut. I’d not seen that and it was surprisingly good. We opted for their Kellerbier dunkel for this one. On their website, it’s called a Dunkles but again, it was very dry and more of a Kellerbier of this area. We really couldn’t decide which we liked better so got one more of each to drink head to head. Both were excellent so by all means, give them both a go.
We didn’t have time or the desire to try their Weißbier but did have it in both bottled form later as well as on tap at their pub. All of their beers have won some medals and I can see why.

Bockbieranstich 2024
I finally got back to this amazing Keller in grand fashion, after the Keller season had ended and for their renowned Bockbieranstich. Nearly impossible to do by public transportation, I jumped on an offer from a friend who was driving. It was as atmospheric as I’d hoped, with kids tending to much needed fires and a true Anstich, with free beer flowing briefly.

a true and increasingly rare Anstich
We managed to get near the front of the queue for an excellent gravity pour of their luscious 8.2% Doppelbock aptly named Stark Löwe, which was dry for the style. The keg version was slightly less soft but not overly carbonated. The burger was so good, I forgot to take a photo of it!
