Spezial Exportbier
Brewery: Spezial
Town: Bamberg
Style: Export Rauchbier 5.3%
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, creamy
Nose: rich malt, light smoke
Body: full
Palate: richly malty, lightly smoky, underlying hops
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, semi-bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery.
Impression: Spezial Exportbier is the Bamberg stalwart’s latest creation. Utilizing a reported old recipe, it nicely combines the rich malt component of an Export with a light but firm smokiness. The underlying hops are similarly firm but unobtrusive. The lingering finish is semi-dry and semi-bitter. Quite nice.

I'm an American living in Munich and Bamberg. Why? Well, I came for the beer but stayed for the girl. I'm very happily married to a German woman. Of course, the bonus of great beer certainly doesn't hurt. An avid love of hiking and finding new beers has led me to found Beerwanderers, an information resource on beer hiking trails in Franconia with an emphasis on Franconian food specialties and the endless variety of amazing beer the region is renowned for. I also published my first book Beer Hiking Bavaria which features 50 beer hikes in Bavaria and lead beer hiking experiences for those who love beer & nature. View all posts by beerwanderers
