Impression: Jürgens Kellerbier is an unfiltered chestnut example of the style. A good friend who just happens to be my main source of information on out of the way and little known Franconian breweries is also an accomplished home brewer. He brews a different beer each year for a small festival he throws near Ansbach. I’ve yet to make it to one but he very nicely brought me a bottle of his 2026 Kellerbier.
These are rustic beers and best drunk sooner than later. This one was brewed with five different malts (Vienna, Pilsener Caraaroma, Rauchmalz and Sauermalz) and Lemondrop and Spalter Select hops. I’d been warned the bottles had gone flat but mine showed good head retention nonetheless. The various hops shown through in the nose and palate. The lingering finish is semi-dry and semi-bitter. It’s nicely balanced and certainly on the Craftier edge of the continuum. Jürgens Kellerbier is still very much a rustic piece of Franconia, brewed by one of the most Franconian people I know.
