This atmospheric forested Bierkeller is a bit up the road from the Brauerei Sauer in Röttenbach but it is likely the best outlet to sample their beers on tap. That it is a super Keller in its own right just adds to its allure.  This is one very family oriented place and a great example of why these little places are so important to a community; kids enjoying themselves in a relatively quiet manner and their parents doing the same over a beer and some food. It’s what makes Franconia so special.

 a shady oasis for families

As you can see, there’s ample stuff to keep the kids busy and amazingly quiet consider their numbers. Well, I guess I was pretty busy with the more adult pleasures on offer. I started off with their tasty Kellerbier and got a mixed plate of Pressack and Sülze. The bread was fresh and meat quality excellent.

I  liked the fact that they had a second beer called Storchenbier on tap. It was described and often referred to as a Dunkles Kellerbier. It was a beer that was not available at their restaurant the previous year so I was happy to find it. I also actually preferred it to the regular Kellerbier.

In addition to the typical cold Bierkeller fare, they had a small but varied number or hot food options including trout, Flammkuchen and pizza. I had eaten not so long before arriving so stuck to something small but look forward to returning and sampling some of their hot food. Prices were very reasonable.

Beers: Sauer Kellerbier and Sauer Storchenbier (Dunkles Kellerbier) on tap. Bottled Rittmayer Weizen.
