Founded in 1811, Brauerei Schwarzer Adler sadly stopped brewing in 2013 but the restaurant remains open. The charmingly cozy Inn serves excellent food as well as a beer brewed for them “according to their recipe” by Brauerei Friedmann in Gräfenberg. While these places are not high priority, I found myself in Schlüsselfeld a couple of hours before the Scheubel Keller opened and to kill some time I stopped in for lunch.

a nice lunch at the Schwarzer Adler

With a Bierkeller visit looming, I went for something light and the Zanderfilet (perch) was nicely presented and done. It came with a good salad and simple but perfectly paired potatoes.  The amber beer was a good accompaniment as well. The service was good considering how busy it was and I wouldn’t hesitate to eat here again if looking for an upmarket meal. If in town, especially for a short visit,  first head to Stern-Bräu or if very well-timed, the Scheubel-Keller. If you have more time, the Schwarzer Adler is a great alternative with a more varied menu. The beer was certainly decent if sadly no longer brewed onsite.

Beers: Schwarzer Adler Hausbier (contract brewed)
