orca.bar is the much anticipated and welcomed addition to the Nürnberg beer scene. Orca Bräu has been the most noted Craft Beer brewery in the area for a number of years. The actual brewery is far on the outskirts of town and is not easy to reach by public transportation. It is mostly open for bottle sales, which can be consumed onsite. This outpost is conveniently located and easy to reach by public transportation.

orca.bar is a modern but cozy pub in the the center of Nürnberg. It would unlikely not attract a lot of tourists if it weren’t for their being the best outlet for Orca Bräu beers. Orca Bräu was founded in 2017 and produces an array of small batch artisanal beers. They brew a full lineup, from experimental ales to more traditional lagers. The latter are still in the Craft Beer direction. The brewery itself is not public transportation friendly, so I was happy to hear of their opening a bar right in town. The orca.bar interior is stylish and low light. On the evening of our visit, it was empty. Everyone was sitting in front, outside.

orca.bar has a convenient backlit screen of their beers on tap, with handy descriptions. There were eight beers on tap, three of which were traditional lagers. A few of the less Franconian beers sounded quite experimental. These were proportionately more expensive. I was mostly interested in sampling their lagers on this trip. So, I stuck to them. The prices for these were good for Nürnberg. The Helles, Pils and typical of Nürnberg Rotbier were all well-made and tasty. There are also bottled/canned beers for sale to drink onsite or to take away.

orca.bar has a limited menu, which appears to vary. They had a chicken burger and fries, and assorted (an intriguing) Flammkuchen. I got one topped with Nürnberg Bratwurst and Sauerkraut. It was very good. I noted one with dill pickles so will use that to lure my wife next time in town.

Service & first impressions
Service was order at the bar. You carry your own drinks and they bring out the food. The bar staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I think it’s a good set up for a bar. You don’t have to wait around for another beer if you want one, something you tend to do in Franconia.
I don’t drink a lot of Craft Beer in Germany as my focus is traditional lagers. I saw this as a one time visit but I’d happily return when in Nürnberg. It is a food value place to grab a simple meal and beer. I found myself intrigued by some of the more experimental beers, especially the Weizens.
