The history

Founded in 1880, Dinkel has gone through a few incarnations but remains a traditional affair. This is the location of the original restaurant but was closed for a number of years. The larger and busier facility (Gasthof Dinkel) on the edge of town does not brew on the premises but was the only place to visit until recently.

Dinkel brothers split duties

I happened upon this quite by accident. After lunch at their restaurant up the road, I as surprised to see some activity on the premises. I’d always admired the old half-timbered building in the center of the courtyard but it appeared closed for good. So, I went in to investigate and found out that the two Dinkel brothers had decided to have two facilities. The original had grown too small as an eatery years ago but brewing continued there.  So, why not serve beer in the courtyard? They are basically open the same hours as they brew but according to the weather. It’s probably safest to go on a sunny Saturday.  There is no food unless there is a special event. Consult their website for these dates. From the photos, it looks like a great time to visit so plan accordingly.

they sell beer to go in a variety of formats and you can enjoy a beer on tap too

Younger brother Hubert and his wife run the brewery/Biergarten and are quite friendly. They sell beer to go in bottles and small kegs. Generally, the beer on tap comes in a ceramic mug but I asked for one in a glass so I could check out the color and as happily obliged. Their Keller Pils, Hausmadä Pils I picked up was lovely.

Finally made a Fest

I finally made it back for one of their events, May 1st 2025. With a busy morning, we got there late afternoon so much of the big throngs had dissipated. The weather was glorious and we really enjoyed sitting on a warm day in the leafy Biergarten with a view the old half-timbered brewery.

 a gorgeous May 1st Festival

Beers on tap: Dunkles Lagerbier, rotating seasonal (Roggenbier, Bockbier, occasional Roggenbock).
