The setting
Set on the idyllic Wiesent River, this former historical Inn has been rescued by a nice couple who run one of the nicest Biergartens in Franconia in the summer months. It’s a small and quite local affair with a smattering of picnic tables on a grassy area along the river as well in more shaded areas next to the old guesthouse. All seats have some kind of view of the slowly flowing river as well as the neighboring hills that hem in the gorgeous valley. It’s self-service and the couple pouring the beer/dishing out the food are quite friendly. It’s a tranquil rustic oasis and a much needed one. The next guesthouse up river appears to be permanently closed.

The beer
Sachsenmühle Biergarten’s real draw for the beerwanderer is its gravity-dispensed beer from Brauerei Ott in nearby Oberleinleiter. They always serve their Obaladara or Original (Landbier on the chalkboard) and when it’s busy enough, they have a second barrel of their Edel-Pils. You have to love a place that believes a dark beer should be the first choice and their clientele seems to agree. I’ll have to say, the beer never tasted so good.

The food
The self-service food menu is limited to Brotzeit but it’s of excellent quality, particularly the fresh bread, and comes with lovingly arranged and ample garnish. The homemade cake is also super. Please note that that food is only available Monday to Friday. Cake is your only option on weekends and they do not allow self-brought food.
