Brauerei Kanone was first mentioned in 1560 but the building it was housed in was destroyed during the 30 Years War. In 1749, Johann Löhr moved to Schnaittach and purchased the rebuilt half-timbered building which included a home, retaurant and blacksmith’s workshop. For 140 years, a Lohr blacksmith worked their trade from the family estate. In 1886, the current Brauerei Kanone was founded and has remained in the Lohr family ever since. Their half-timbered pub closed in 2005 but two young friends of the up and coming Lohr brewer decided to revive it, albeit on a part time basis in 2023.

nicely done up interior & popular courtyard
I had been trying to make it on an open weekend for months before finally arriving to a packed outside seating area, only minutes after opening. It seems you can probably get a beer before the official opening time. I wanted to see the interior anyway and found it very pleasant, airy and a lot less busy on this gorgeous summer afternoon. I started off with their seasonal Sommerseidla, a surprisingly tasty 3.1% session beer. They have a relatively small menu but was happy to see that their special of the weekend was Kalter Braten. It was obviously very freshly made, very tender and moist and still almost warm. The bread was also super fresh. They nicely brought me an extra portion of horseradish. It was definitely one of the best I’ve ever had. The summer beer went down quickly and I moved onto their house special Bräustüberlseidla, an unfiltered version of the Kanone Hell which is only available there.

a lovely beer in a lovely Biergarten
I finished up with their 39er Pils, which was my favorite and though stuffed, I couldn’t resist a piece of Zwiebelkuchen, an onion pie from a local bakery. It turned out to be three small pieces so I needed another Pils to wash it down.
a tasty Pils & onion pie
I would gladly return here and the enticement of a changing beer each month might find me here soon. Service was efficient and friendly, especially considering how busy it was. Messaging with them prior to my visit was quite good too and helpful since I was coming a long way for my visit.
This is an easy excursion from Nürnberg with frequent direct trains.
Beers: Bräustüberlseidla (unfiltered Kanone Hell, only available here), 39er Pils plus one specialty beer such as their Sommerseidla.
Back to Schnaittach.
