This was another place I’d written off as a kitschy touristy restaurant. I’d been across the street at the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof a few times and couldn’t see why anyone would choose it over the “real” brewery. Some friends had posted about their Hütt’n beers so I looked into it a bit further and unsurprisingly, they were contract beers from Rittmayer Hallerndorf and Pyraser. It still looked intriguing and on investigating, I noticed they had quite a few good guest beers on tap as well.

I was there at opening so it was empty inside but I took a peek and it was nicer than I’d imagined. I asked the server if I could get a beer to bring outside and she brought it out nonetheless. I started with their Haubräu Dunkel and once I saw the number of beers, I ordered a plate of Kalterbraten so I could eat it at a leisurely pace. It was a massive plate, came with a nice variety and amount of fresh vegetables, and was excellent quality. I was onto their Hausbräu Rot before I knew it. If you are wondering why the Rotbier looks so much better, it’s because the bar manager poured it. He was inside when I needed a second beer and not only did a much better job but also answered my questions about the beer. He confirmed they were from Rittmayer in Hallerndorf.

Hausbier Rot & Dunkel plus a gorgeous plate of Kalterbraten
Though I wasn’t planning on having so many beers, the meal really was ample and it turned out to be a pleasant spot to sit outside. It was early and not only was the restaurant not busy yet, neither was the street which is the main thoroughfare to the castle. I tried their Hausbräu Hell, with a bad pour from the server and Pyraser Kellerbier, perfectly poured by the manager. I debated on this last pick with so many good guest beers to choose from but I’d never had it and it came out looking quite majestic.

Hausbier Hell & Pyraser
While not exactly a must destination for its own beer, it certainly has a formidable line-up of guest beers and their own beers from Rittmayer are certainly worth trying. It’s also a nice looking pub and a great place for a light meal if this Kalterbraten was any indication. When I was sitting there looking over at the brewery, I wondered if I’d ever go back. This place was better value, the food was much better quality and the beer was easily as good, and I hadn’t even drunk any of the top notch guest beers on offer. Just hope you get the right person pouring!
Beers: Hausbräu Rot, Hausbräu Hell, Hausbräu Dunkel, Pyraser Kellerbier, Meister Vollbier, Neder Schwarze Anna, Landwehr Hell and Rittmayer Das Pils.
