The former Mauthalle dates back to around 1500 and was used as a granary. It later also served as a customs office where all incoming goods were weighed and inspected. Its use as a Keller/restaurant began in 1929. It was the Barfüßer brewery from 1994 until its closure in 2020. In 2022, Tucher stepped in and rekindled the copper kettles already in place and did a major refurbishment, as befits the prime location of their new “brewpub” aptly named the Mautkeller.

I was in town in February 2023 to sample the Rotbiers of Nürnberg and kind of stumbled across this place in the process. Since it opened at 16:00 that day, I wound up having dinner here. The typical plate of Nürnbergers (small sausages) was good, though the Rotbier was my least favorite of the day. Next time, I’ll try the unfiltered Helles which according to their write-up uses Spalter Hops.

a decent plate of Nürnbergers & a lackluster Rotbier

Beers: Tucher Urbräu Hell unfiltered, Tucher Rotes Lagerbier unfiltered.

It’s not likely this will become a regular stop for me in Nürnberg but if you’re staying in town, it’s probably worth having a meal here.
