The setting
Housed in a beautifully restored old half-timbered house, the Spitalhaus is a popular place for a beer and snack. Set on the gently flowing Leuterbach with a close view of the city tower, it’s an atmospheric stop in Bad Staffelstein.

a lovely stop: Spitalhaus
The food & beer
We stopped on May 1st 2025 for a quick beer while waiting for our Ruf Bus to Uetzing as it’s just a short walk from the train station. I’d noticed their earlier than usual opening hours on Instagram. We shared an order of Ziebeleskäs, a cottage cheese type spread. It was quite good as was the Hellmuth Hell. I believe the latter was a renamed Eierberg Urstoff from the nearby Brauerei Hellmuth in Wiesen.

a tasty snack & beer
It was fairly busy despite all of the other events going on for May 1st. It’s self-service for your beverages. You also order your food at the same window and it’s brought out to you. Service was friendly and quick. The beer was excellent and the food, while simpe, is nicely done.
Beers on tap: assorted regional favorites, especially those from neighboring villages in the Bad Staffelstein postal code like Hetzel, Hellmuth & Thomann. There’s also a fair bottle selection.
Back to Bad Staffelstein or towns.
