There has been brewery with pub at this location since 1756 and it’s been run by the Hellmuth family since 1812. This appears to be the more successful of the two village pubs and until recently had quite friendly opening hours. I’m not sure if it’s due to COVID or perhaps they have an agreement with neighbor Brauerei Thomann to not compete with each other as the only day they are both open is Thursday. We actually visited here a few years ago and admittedly not under the best of circumstances. Our chosen lunch stop in nearby End was unexpectedly closed and I remembered Hellmuth being in the vicinity. It was a short drive and it was open but unfortunately we’d missed lunch so all they could rustle up for us was something cold, not what you’re generally looking for in a midday Sunday meal. I got the Dosenfleisch which was quite good and washed it down with their Eierberg Urstoff.

My wasn’t as happy with her Kalterbraten and as you can see, it was fairly fatty. Thankfully, it came with some Zwiebeleskäse, one of her favorites. It would have helped if the server had at least been apologetic about there being no hot meals but it seemed more like we were bothering her just by our being there. We were the only ones there so it really shouldn’t have been a problem. At any rate, I also go their Hanna Märzenbier.

I had planned on returning and going to Thomann not long after this visit but it didn’t come to pass and then COVID made it impossible. I hope to return on a Thursday and to perhaps spend the night so I can get a more full experience at both Wiesen breweries.
