Rosenauer Hofbräu/Privatbrauerei Schmölzing

Rosenauer Hofbräu is located in Marktgraitz. This small village in the Lichtenfels country of Upper Franconia  is most easily accessed via Redwitz an der Rodach. While that sounds remote, it’s on the line between Bamberg and Kronach. It’s unlikely you’d be out this way aside from visiting the quaint little brewery run by a charming couple who may only do this part time but obviously put their hearts and soul into the place. There are buses from the station that stop just about out front but they are irregular and the short walk has charms of its own.

The history:

Founded in 2015, this is surely one of the smallest breweries in Franconia. It would appear more a hobby brewery than a commercial enterprise if it weren’t so thoughtfully put together. Essentially in the owners’ backyard, the simple but beautifully constructed pub and Biergarten are charming with flowery touches everywhere. I immediately thought my wife would love the place and hope to show it to her next time out.

The atmosphere:

Though the interior pub was charming, it was a lovely day so I sat out in the pretty Hof Biergarten. A few guys had arrived just before me from the looks of their beers. It had just opened and the owner was busy serving what looked to be her family dinner, along with getting the place ready for her guests. She nonetheless scampered over to pour me a beer and explain it would be a half hour before the food would be ready.

The beer:

I was saddened to hear their Braunbier was out due to a seasonal Weizen called Saschi’s Weiße being on. I’m not generally a big Weizen fan but it was a warm day, I’d walked out and I wasn’t sure if I’d see it again. It turned out to be quite good if unusual for the style, with fair hopping and a lovely lingering dry finish.

The food:

I was pretty hungry and the food wasn’t coming anytime soon so I, unusually for me, ordered another Weizen. I checked out the food at the little food truck, which the owner did herself and put my order in for Heißer Schinken. She said I could have the ham cold more quickly but that it was better hot so I opted for the latter. Finding her husband now manning the bar, I explained I was a friend of Manuele Colonna from Rome and he asked if I was the one who had called earlier.  It had been the noted Franconian beer entrepeneur’s post which had originally cued me onto the small brewpub. He poured me their Helles Engela and I returned to my choice spot to await my food.

Though the Helles was good, I’d liked the Weizen more and was glad I’d had a second one. The food was very good too and warranted a second Helles. I was super glad I’d made the effort to get there and will definitely return for their Braunbier hopefully soon, with my wife.

The Return with the Wife:

It took a year but on hearing the Braunbier was back on, I convinced my wife it was her kind of place. She agreed immediately once there. The beer was not only their best but they had an antipasto plate that cemented the deal.
