The Neder Keller is one of the centerpieces of the sprawling Forchheimer Kellerwald, a series of some 22 Bierkellers some of which are only open for the town’s legendary Annafest. It’s one of the largest and with perhaps Forchheim’s most beloved beers, most popular.

I’d only been here during the Annafest but with the festival cancelled once again due to COVID restrictions, I ventured up on a Sunday to have lunch and see what it’s like on a regular day. We found a full menu of food on offer and they were even serving their noted Export from gravity dispense.

the large lush Neder Keller & gravity dispense Export

I went for Rauchbauch mit Bohen, a real specialty dish I’m finding more often and one I like quite a lot. It’s smoked stomach meat with beans and is a lot tastier than it might look. My wife had a taste and said the same thing.  She went for Schäuferla and said it was one of the best she’s ever had. The skin was crispy perfect. She got a Schwarze Anna as her second beer. It’s only available in the bottle, just like at their pub in town. The only way to get it on tap is at the Annafest.

Schwarze Anna & some tasty meals

We’ve been going to Forchheim more and more. I must say I’ll be heading up to the Kellerwald more and more as well. I’d like to check out the food at a few more of the year round Kellers and I’m sure we’ll be going to the Neder Keller for lunch again soon too.
