Situated right on the Siebersturm, which was a rather late addition to the town’s fortifications in 1385, Landwehr am Turm is undoubtedly a place you will at least walk by. There’s a good chance you’ll even take a photo of the narrow half-timbered structure its housed in. The view from the other side of the tower is perhaps the iconic image of Rothenburg. While a trip to Landwehr-Bräu is worthwhile, for those with limited time, this outlet is a fine alternative. With an eclectic and surprisingly satisfying vegetarian menu and four Landwehr Bräu beers on tap, it’s worth having a meal here even if you have been to the brewery proper.

a cozy traditional interior

With spring in full force in all its glory, sitting in the admittedly cozy interior was not an option so we clamored for a spot in their obviously popular and cute if rather small Biergarten.

a nicely poured Landwehr-Bräu Hell in the cute little Biergarten

I’d not been impressed with the Edel Hell at the Landwehr-Bräu Gasthof so was happy to see their regular Helles on tap at this location. The small menu was innovative in their use of fresh produce on both newish to Franconian items like Pinza (a flatbread-like pizza) and typical things like potato salad. I moved onto their Kellerbier which was underwhelming at the brewery and while lacking the hint of butter there, it remained more or less bland.

A lackluster Kellerbier but excellent Pinza

We quite liked this place and returned two more times and had pretty much the same meals. They varied a bit as the staff was overwhelmed at times due to a rush of more people than perhaps they are accustomed to. Sometimes ingredients seemed lacking or in less abundance but it was always good. The young servers, who also run the restaurant and prepare the food, are very friendly and were doing their best given the situation. I gave the Landwehr Pils another shot but it again was unimpressive and would have to say the Helles would be my go-to beer here.

Landwehr-Bräu Toppler Pils & innovative potato salad

Though the beer isn’t anything amazing, the restaurant sure is and it is a local beer you don’t find on tap outside the area often. If in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, it’s well worth checking out.

Beers: Landwehr-Bräu Hell, Landwehr-Bräu Toppler Pils, Landwehr-Bräu Kellerbier all on tap. According to their menu, they also have their Kirchweichbier on tap but it wasn’t in season. They sadly do not carry the Landwehr-Bräu Altfränkisch which I think in the end is our favorite of their beers.
