Kellerfest am Wolfenkeller history & atmosphere

The Wolfenkeller was the natural storage cave for Brauerei Wolf in times before refrigeration. Once beer could be kept cold at the breweries, Bierkellers often became obsolete. It was too much work to transport the beer to the Bierkeller just to sell it there. This was the case with Brauerei Gasthof Wolf. In former times, they brewed in town and mostly sold it for consumption at the Bierkeller. Since they lagered it there, it made logical sense. In the 1970s, the family expanded the facilities at the brewery to create a true Inn, with overnight accommodation and a full service restaurant. The Wolfenkeller went into disuse but they open it once a year for the Kellerfest, an eagerly awaited event by locals. It also draws people from the surrounding area due to its unique and very traditional atmosphere. Of particular note is an old school natural Kegelbahn or bowling alley.

The beer

Kellerfest am Wolfenkeller offers both the brewery’s standard beers on tap. While I’ve always preferred the Brauerei Wolf Urtyp Dunkel, it appears the majority of drinkers gravitate towards their Pils. The latter wasn’t in the best shape, but that didn’t seem to deter its adherents. I had one and went right back to the Dunkel.

The food

They had a nice selection of simple dishes at the Kellerfest am Wolfenkeller. They made it seem more varied by offering the Bratwurst and Steaks as either sandwiches or for a bit more, with a salad. So, I had one of each. There was also a variety of cakes and I opted for Kirschstreusel or cherry crumb cake.

 tasty treats

The Kellerfest am Wolfenkeller had been on my bucket list for a few years, so I was happy to finally get out there. It was a gloriously sunny day and though my transportation was longer than needed due to construction on the line, it went without a hitch. Even though it’s a bit of a long trip, I’d gladly return again. It was the 47th one, so hopefully Herr Wolf will keep it going for another three years!

The 48th Annual Kellerfest am Wolfenkeller is on Sunday, August 16th, 2027.

Beers on tap: Pils, Urtyp Dunkel
