Haxenbraterei Coburg is located in the old town center of Coburg, so it’s very convenient to both its many sights and the train station.

Biersalon Coburg decor & atmosphere
Haxenbraterei Coburg is the former Zum Goldenen Hirschen and still features the gorgeous wood interior the latter was noted for. It’s a picture postcard German pub from another age and oddly, something you don’t find a lot of in the Franconian countryside. The cozy interior has mix of simple wood and painted wooden panels. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s the second oldest pub in Coburg. Zum Goldenen Hirschen closed in July 2023 and Haxenbraterei renovated it, thankfully in a tasteful manner.

The beer at Haxenbraterei Coburg
Haxenbraterei Coburg came to my attention when looking for beer from Wachtelbräu. Zum Goldenen Hirschen had it on tap for a couple of years but unfortunately, the new owners opted to go with Humbser Lager Naturtrüb. It’s certainly not a bad beer and the bartender did a great slow pour to maximize its visual appeal. That said, it’s a Tucher beer in the end, and comes from another region of Franconia. There’s certainly better regional options. For better beer in town, I’d head to Biersalon Coburg for a more interesting selection. The food at Haxenbraterei Coburg looked quite good and Coburg isn’t exactly full of great restaurants. So, between that and the decor of the pub, I imagine I’ll be back again.
Beers on tap at Haxenbraterei Coburg: Humbser Lager Naturtrüb & a changing beer, Zirndorfer Kellerbier when I was there. Four different bottled alcohol free beers from Staffelberg-Bräu.
Back to Coburg.
