The Gasthaus Holzapfel has been around since 1806 and was noted as a Würzburg outlet of the beers from Brauerei Wolf in Fuchsstadt. Sadly, that financially troubled brewery was bought up by Kauzen-Bräu of Ochsenfurt in 2009. Their beers continue to be contract brewed there. Hence, all the glassware in the pub is from Kauzen-Bräu as well. It is one of those dying breed pubs which has a regular following and can hopefully continue. I stopped in to find four “Wolf” beers on tap as well as a rare on tap Kloster Kreuzberg Dunkel and quite odd for Franconia, Tegernsee Helles! I opted for the Dunkel since I rarely get to the Kloster. If I’d had more time, I would have tried the Wolf Schwarzpils, the name alone is worth going back for.

Sign heralding “Wolf” beers & Kloster Kreuzberg served in Kauzen glass

This is definitely a find in Würzburg for those seeking out non-Kulmbacher owned beers. It’s also a quirky little place worth supporting.

Beers on tap: Brewed by Kauzen-Bräu (Wolf Pils, Wolf Hefeweizen, Wolf Schwarzpils, Wolf Kellerbier), Kloster Kreuzberg Dunkel, Tegernsee Helles.
