Forchheim is a charming little town with lots of half-timbered houses and a nice scenic main square. First mentioned in 805, it was formally recognized as a city around 1200 and is now a gateway town to the scenic area known as the Franconian Switzerland. It makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area, which is full of countryside breweries. You won’t go thirsty in the evening, either, as there are four breweries in the small town itself! My most recent trip and blog about Forchheim. Some hiking descriptions to the neighboring areas are here and here.
