Brauerei Haberstumpf (Trebgast)

Brauerei Haberstumpf in Trebgast is a lovingly restored brewery inn with a scenic location in the Kulmbach country of Upper Franconia. You can easily reach it by direct trains from Bayreuth, Kulmbach and lengthier ones often involving a change from Bamberg. The walk from the station is quite scenic if you take a set of stairs that run along the road.

Brauerei Haberstumpf history

Brauerei Haberstumpf was founded in 1531 though there is evidence of brewing as far back as 1394 in the nearby church square. It was in the Habestumpf family from 1813 to 1948 before passing it onto a niece lacking the family name when the brewer died. Brewing sadly ceased in 2019 but thankfully a local entrepreneur from Kulmbach bought it and reopened it in 2019.

the Biergarten & beer

The interior surprised me as as I’d mostly read about the Biergarten. It’s very much traditional but with a slight modern flair. The brewer was pouring the beer and seemed happy I was interested in the Maibock so he poured me a huge sample. It was good enough to order a whole one.  It was too nice a day to sit inside so we went back out in the sun to enjoy the view. We didn’t have much time for another so vowed to return, and that I did a few weeks later.

a return longer visit

Second visit: food & beer

My return visit was more relaxed so started off with their Hell, which was much better than the filtered version I had a few years prior. I was glad I’d had the Maibock the first time around as it was only in bottles now.

Haberstumpf Rubin & Jägerschnitzel

I got the Jägerschnitzel which was incredible. It went well with the dark Rubin. As good as the beers were, I’d have to say the dish overshadowed them all. With such a big meal, I decided to try their Hahn Zwergla even though it was just in bottles. I noticed they had house-made Schnaps and since the meal was very rich, I got one one of those too.

one more beer & a Schnaps for digestion

When I paid up, I asked about the Hahn Zwergla’s tap availability and she told me it was on tap inside. In the Biergarten, they only have two beers on tap. So, if there and looking to try seasonal beers, go inside. They have a few and also have large salads which looked good so sure I’ll be back with my wife soon..
