History of Braukommune Kunigundenberg & Bimberla Biere
Communal brewing was part of the history of Lauf an der Pegnitz in the 14th century. Braukommune Kunigendenberg was founded in 2016 by some creative home brewers who had been at it for 20 years before taking the plunge. It was named after the hill top Biergarten with a long history of Fests and pageants. It then became known as Kuni Bräu for a short while. With the increasing popularity of their Bimberla beer, the name has become the umbrella for the entire brewery. They also appear to do collaboration beers with Brauerei Simon and Dreykorn. Perhaps the bottled products are produced at the larger breweries but that’s just my theory.

an atmospheric Biergarten location
The setting
The hilltop Biergarten Kunigundenberg has a long history and was rightfully popular long before they started serving the Bimberla beers. It’s a rustic layout but the views of the old church and surrounding countryside are quite enticing. The simple dispensary and food truck fit in well.

great views & brews
The beer & food
There is quite the line-up of beer with four from Bimberla Biere and three from the other local Brauerei Simon. We didn’t have a lot of time and once I had their Glockengießer Sud, I couldn’t not have another. Those not into dark beer went for the most popular Bimberla. I got a couple of sandwiches to tide me over. Both were good and prices all around quite reasonable.
a great round of beer & food
Service was super friendly and though this was a bit of an add on stop which wasn’t really on our way, it was a real highlight. I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Biergarten Kunigundenberg again as they rotate beers and have lots of special events.
Beers from Bimberla Biere Lauf on tap: Bimberla, Glockengießer Sud, Waikiki Peach, Leichtes Kuni (not available that day but perhaps rotating with Sommer Seidla and Hellgunde).
Beers on tap from Brauerei Simon: Spezial, Hell, Weißbier.
Assorted bottles, regional wines & cocktails make it a great stop for even the non-beer drinker.
Back to Lauf an der Pegnitz or towns.
