Hohe Wart Haus is a popular forest Biergarten/Brewery in the shadow of its namesake “mountain.” Though located in the county of Miltenberg, it is closer geographically to Aschaffenburg. In fact, regular buses from there ply the route into the region, though to reach it without a car, you’ll have to do a short hike or cycle to enjoy its comforts.

The Spessart region is lovely so spending a bit of time to reach the beery destination of Hohe Wart Haus shouldn’t be taken as a chore. There are numerous routes but I chose to get off the bus in Hessenthal. From the church, it’s a steady but forgiving climb into the countryside.

lovely route to Hohe Wart Haus
Rather than walk back the same route, I made my way to Mespelbrunn. This was largely to see the Wasser Schloss, a pretty water castle, there. The more obvious bonus is to see some new scenery. It was only marginally longer and it’s the same bus back, just an earlier stop.

History & tradition
Hohe Wart Haus owes its existence to Antonius Sartor, a noted forester and hunter. He built the hunting lodge in 1733. Conveniently on the the path between Aschaffenburg and and Schloss Mespelbrunn, its popularity grew quickly. It went through numerous hands over the course of time and the city of Aschaffenburg now owns it. This includes quite a bit of the land surrounding it. The area has been a magnet for hikers since 1876 with a extensive network of trails. The Hohe Wart Haus is a certain attraction.

Hohe Wart Bräu
Hohe Wart Bräu was founded in 2004. It’s just out back of the old hunting lodge and is quite small. The beer is only available onsite. Along with the staple Räuber Hell, Räuber Dunkel and Weizen Hell, they brew a few seasonal beers. I unfortunately just missed out on the Maibock so hope to return for the Weihnachtsbock. There is also a Dunkler Weizenbock. They’re all unfiltered rustic beers with good drinkability. All beers were nicely poured in branded glassware. Aside from the Weizen, it was in .4l glasses, which is standard for this area.

Food
Hohe Wart Haus serves a fairly extensive menu daily with both hot roast meals and smaller options. It’s particularly so on Sundays and holidays. I was there on Whit Monday and it was very crowded but it did give me the opportunity to have their amazing Spanferkel. It wasn’t cheap but it was quite large and excellent quality. With its proximity to Frankfurt, prices seem to be higher in this region than even Bamberg.

I quite enjoyed the Hohe Wart Haus despite my poor planning of going on a holiday. I guess I’d imagined it not being so crowded due to its relative remote location. It’s good to see that there are plenty of hikers making their way to Hohe Wart Haus. With such good food and beer, it’s easy to see why.
