Altstadt Schänke atmosphere

Altstadt Schänke is very much in the American sport bar mode. It’s modern with a sit at bar and high tables with stools. So, it’s set up for standing. There are large screen TVs for watching games, a pool table and even a pinball machine. There’s a covered stand up area outside next to the pub where you can smoke. Out front are a few stand up tables but this is Sandstrasse in Bamberg so on a busy weekend night, the crowds spill out into the general drinking population. Accordingly, you pay a 2€ deposit on your glass so that you can wander around.

The beer

I had walked by Altstadt Schänke during the day many times but it’s strictly a no-food nighttime venue. Though not my kind of place, the beer line-up was intriguing enough. So, I stopped by on a slow evening stroll down Sandstrasse. They appear to carry three staple beers on tap and a rotating one. Though the Freudenecker Helles was tempting as their special, I opted for Knoblach Räuschla and it was in very good form.

While Alstadt Schänke isn’t really my cup of tea, it certainly will have its adherents and I commend them on having some different beers on tap. One knock about Bamberg is most pubs seem to carry the same usual suspects. Though they are good beers, with so many choices in the area, it would be nice to have more variety.

Beers on tap:Knoblach Räuschla, Adler-Bräu Stettfelder Lager, Ahörnla Helles. One rotating beer such as Freudenecker Helles.
