The Grüner Baum in Kasendorf is a lovely old inn with renewed purpose and well worth a visit for its hospitality, food and of course self-brewed beer.
Kasendorf

Kasendorf is an unassuming village in the the Kulmbach country of Upper Franconia. Located 12 kilometers southwest 0f Kulmbach, it’s most easily reached by public transportation from there. Alternatively, you can go from Bayreuth which is about twice as far to the south and involves a change. The Killianskirche is just up the street from the brewery so worth having a peek.

Magnus-Bräu history
Magnus-Bräu was founded in 1753 but sadly stopped brewing in 2004. The town’s long history of communal brewing had seemingly come to a close until rescued in 2023 by the Grüner Baum Wirtshaus. The pub itself is old world cozy in the nice wooden interior way. The Magnus-Bräu sign and tap font herald its return proudly. It would be easy to spend an evening here and with rooms available, something to consider.

the Biergarten, beer & food
It was too nice a day so the equally charming little Biergarten drew us to sit. A Krug of their flagship Märzen was soon in front of us with its richly malty balanced palate easily inviting another with our meal. The freshly pounded pan-fried Schnitzel was excellent. The accompanying potato salad homemade. There is a small regular menu along with changing daily specials.

the service
Service was very friendly. Since we were obviously interested in beer, they informed us that their Maibock was coming out the following week so I returned the next week to sample it. All I can say, it was worth the trip, even by public transportation from Bamberg. It’s a marvelous example of the wide-ranging style. I also got to try their Bratwurst and they were excellent, as well.

Magnus Bräu Maibock & Bratwurst
I also noted on their website there are two additional seasonal beers so a great reason to return regularly to the Grüner Baum in Kasendorf.
Beers on tap: Magnus Bräu Märzen, Mönchshof Original (please don’t order this!)
