Brewing at this site dates back to 1671 and ceased in 1957. The four year restoration of the dilapidated building began in 2004 which won an achievement award for their fine work in bringing the communal brewery of the small village back to life in 2008. As communal breweries in Lower Franconia go, it’s looked up to as one of the best run and successful despite not being able to sell beer commercially.

I was happy to be invited to one of their brewing days by a good friend who is a member of a neighboring communal brewery in Köslau. With this link, I was welcomed warmly by the members and shown around the gorgeously restored facilities.

Of course for a non-brewing person such a myself, the biggest attraction was getting to drink their Haubier on tap. I’d been gifted bottles of both it and their formidable Bock and knew of their excellent quality.

They are not generally open to the public outside of events. One of them is their annual Bockanstich and I finally made it to that in 2024. We got there fairly early and nabbed a Bock but it got quite crowded soon after that. Between the turnout and the beer being a bit too gassy coming out of the lines, it took forever to get a second beer. I found the bottled Bock I had the previous beer to be much more complex and better unfortunately. Word has it that the gravity version was better but I wasn’t privy to its contents. I was nonetheless very happy to finally making there after not being able to do so for a few years.
