Founded in 1872 and in the same family ever since, Griess is truly a classic small Franconian marvel. Places like this are disappearing all too fast so try to enjoy them while they are there. It’s a real Mom & Pop operation but in this case, it’s more Grand Mom & Grand Pop. It’s a simple and small place but cozy. I’ll never forget the first time I went. My wife and I walked in soaking like wet rats on a gloomy Saturday. We’d walked from Litzendorf in a steady rain. The old women manning the entire place looked at us like we were a bit crazy to be out in such weather but brought us a couple of their very tasty Kellerbiers promptly. She felt so bad to tell us that hot food was only available on Sundays at lunch. She then said she had just finished a roast pork that was to be cooled down for Kalterbraten (cold sliced pork) but that if we wanted some of that, she’d bring us some. Since we’d eaten something at Brauerei Wagner just up the road, we opted for one portion of it. We were glad we had as it was quite big for €5. It was also absolutely wonderful: by far the best Kalterbraten we’ve ever had. Her husband came in later and from photos I’ve seen, it was the brewer.

I took my father there last year and was sad to not see the old women again but hopefully she was just not working that late in the evening. We had a mixed meat plate, a Zwetchgenbames (smoked beef) plate and a cheese plate. All were quite good and ample. In fact, we had a hard time finishing them off. The beer was as good as remembered, too.

With the Griesskeller opening later on Saturdays, I was happy to discover that Brauerei Griess has a nice little Biergarten out back. My recent tour enjoyed it and their Zwetchgenbames.

Beerwanderers enjoying Brauerei Griess

I recently made it to their Bockbieranstich and a marvelous Bock it was. I’ll be sure to make it part of my yearly events in the future!

August 2024 saw Beerwanderers make it to the Geisfeld Kerwa and the 2nd edition of their St. Petrus Festbier. This is surely another must do on the every growing events we’ll try to make it to every year.

I unfortunately couldn’t make their Bockbieranstich in 2024 but stopped a couple of day later to try the new somewhat controversial Keller Bock which all felt was well-crafted but some found to be too far outside the parameters of a Franconian Bock. I’m sure those at the Anstich were a bit taken aback on the first sip but having been forewarned, I found it quite tasty and could see merits in both points of view.
