Wittmann’s Keller history & atmosphere

Wittmann’s Keller is a historic rock cellar that dates back to 1674. It was closed for nearly three decades before a major renovation and reopening in 2025. It is set in a tract of forest yet manages some sunny spots early afternoon. The rustic wooden hut serves as a beer/food dispensary, but also provides a warm cozy spot to sit if the weather is sour. Benches have seated backs, something older folks appreciate and I can now count myself in that group. They have their own branded umbrellas, a nice touch, especially if you change your choice of brewery. The restrooms were obviously recently renovated and will seal the deal if bringing someone who is not into rusticity. It seemed to be frequented entirely by locals, most intermingling. That said, I was welcomed warmly. It was fairly busy but no one seemed to talking too loudly. So, it’s a peaceful place to relax.

Wittman’s Keller beer

Wittmann’s Keller changed their beer from Kraus of Hirschaid to Lieberths of Hallerndorf. Nothing against the former, but Lieberth truly is one of Franconia’s best. Though I’ve wanted to check out this Keller for some time, I’d be lying if I said the switch didn’t prompt my visit. Unlike the Dorf Keller and Lieberth Kreuzberg in Hallerndorf, the beer is not gravity dispensed, but it was in fantastic form. It was served in a branded Krug and perfectly poured.

Food at Wittmann’s Keller

The food menu is small but thoughtfully chosen. The Schnitzel looked (and smelled) great, but after quite a few days in Franconia, pork was not on my radar. I opted for a their Käse Dreierlei. In their case, it was three different cheese spreads (Gerupfter, Ziebeleskäse & Kochkäse). It wasn’t huge, but fairly priced and plenty for one person. They give you a perfect amount of bread, as well. The use of the modern electronic alert makes it easy to retrieve your food. Thankfully, it only does so with a vibration, rather than a sound, keeping things peaceful in the forest.

Wittmanns Keller walk over Regnitz

I quite liked Wittmann’s Keller. Initially, the walk put me off, but it turned out to be quite nice. It’s a nice alternative to making your way out to Hallerndorf. While I find the latter still a notch or two better, this is more convenient if coming from Bamberg. It’s easier to time your trip back, as well. I would imagine it’s a much easier trip on a bike, too.

Beers: Lieberth Kellerbier on tap. Bottled Weizen.
