Stressenhausen Brauhaus

Stressenhausen Brauhaus is a small historical communal brewery best visited during its annual Brauhausfest. It’s located in Stressenhausen, a picturesque village nestled in the rural Hildburghausen county of Thuringia. First mentioned in 1191, it’s home to the St. Bartholomew Luthern Church as well as the classic houses in Thuringian gray slate. It’s also part of the municipality of Straufhain. Hildburghauseen is rich in communal breweries. Across the border from Lower Franconia and part of the Fränkischer Reichskreis, it’s included here as it’s historically and linguistically tied.

Stressenhausen sights

Stressenhausen is conveniently located on the bus line between Hildburghausen and Seßlach. So, I did not need to do any walking but the landscape is pretty with many paths.

History

Stressenhausen Brauhaus dates back to 1855 and was active until 1971. They completely renovated it and used the facility as a community meeting place. The local fire brigade decided to bring brewing back to Stressenhausen in 2017. Brewing continues to this day on a small scale. They annually brew a spring and autumn batch. These are for self-consumption and for their annual Brauhausfest. After a few beers and food, a friend managed to get us a tour of the old school communal brewery.

Stressenhausen Brauhausfest 2026

Stressenhausen generally only has one festival per year. Though named Brauhausfest, it features traditional savory “cakes” of the region. It had a very local feel and was small enough to be contained on one narrow street. We were there early so there were plenty of spaces under the provided cover. There were only lines for the traditional baked goods but even those went fast.

The beer

Stressenhausen Brauhaus Hausbrauerbier was a malty treat. A low carbonation amber brew as expected in these parts, it had a lovely grainy palate. The dry lingering finish along with the food had me going back a few times

The Food

Stressenhausen Brauhaus offers very traditional baked goods. These are highly coveted due to their limited availability. Dätscher (often also spelled Detscher) is particularly so. This potato based “pie” is topped with smoky ham pieces, much like Flammkuchen. It’s quite thin and pliable. Zwiebelkuchen or onion pie is similarly thin in the area. Of course, they have your typical grilled meats like Bratwurst and Steaksemmel. The Bratwurst is coarsely ground, typical in Protestant areas. They slice the rolls from the top, rather than side.

They also had a range of homemade cakes at the Stressenhausen Brauhausfest. As is typical, women from the village bake and bring their specialties. These weren’t particularly to our taste but certainly not from a quality standpoint, just not our style. Sadly, they didn’t have rhubarb or gooseberry varieties, our personal favorites.

Stressenhausen Brauhausfest was a very well-run local affair. It was particularly nice to finally show my wife one of these Franconian Thuringian communal brewery festivals. The Dätscher were a real plus. Couple this with the relative ease to get there, and I’d be happy to return again.
