Schmölz is in the municipality of Küps, which is located in the Kronach county of Upper Franconia. For such a small village, it’s surprisingly decked out with a lovely church and castle. Royalty sold the latter in 1861, some 360 years after they’d built it. They must have felt that what made it special had passed but perhaps they hadn’t realized it would one day be home to a fine little brewery on the edge of the Frankenwald Nature Park.

Schmölz is easily reached by trains to Küps which run frequently between Litchtenfels and Kronach. Unfortunately, the station is about a 40 minute walk from the brewery. It’s not a big municipality with regard to population perhaps but in area, big enough if you don’t have a vehicle. There are buses but they don’t run often enough to be of much use, given the brewery’s opening hours. The first part of the walk is pretty bleak but once out in the countryside, it’s a quite scenic.
