Säger Bräu

Säger Bräu is in Weidenloh, a small village in the same municipality as Pottenstein so located in the Bayreuth county of Upper Franconia. It’s also set in the pretty Franconian Switzerland which draws tourists enamored with nature and outdoor activities. In this case, it is golf and there is a noted full size course. Of more interest to the beerwanderer is the mini-golf course which added its own brewery in 2022.

Säger Bräu history

Säger Bräu started brewing in 2022 but their journey has been a long and interesting one. With the closure of the old saw mill, the “town” was in need of some economic stimulus. First came a full size golf course and then Abenteuergolf, a state of the art mini-golf. This was perfect for the kid-friendly area and in Franconia, there’s got to be somewhere to eat and drink beer onsite. A Biergarten was built and they had a beer brewed by Binkert in Breitengüßbach in 2021. The next year, they brought in a dark contract beer from Mager in nearby Pottenstein. In addition, they started to brew special beers in a very small 100L system. They moved the new 400L kit into the old mill which grew to 10HL in 2023. After extensive training and even more expansion, their first batches were ready in 2024.

the Biergarten, beer & food

Säger Bräu Biergarten is more of an outside seating area with umbrellas and no real tree shade. It does, however, have a nice view of the mini-golf course. It’s certainly a great place to have a beer and not have to worry about the kids. There are two staple beers, a Hell and a Dunkel.

The others rotate. There was a Lagerbier and Sommerseidla when I was there. Unfortunately, there was no food during the week but friends say, it’s good and excellent value. Since I was with a small group, I was able to try all four but was disappointed the Stöffla (Kellerbier) wasn’t on offer.

I quite like the Säger Bräu beer and the concept. The woman serving was very friendly and proud of her son who seemed to wearing many hats to keep the place going. If in the area, it’s well worth a stop and I look forward to returning to try some of the other beers and have something to eat.
